Last week, I drove over 1,200 miles in my high-mileage Subaru on a trip to the deep Sandhills of Nebraska.
Why did I drive all the way out there?
I needed the silence.
The chaos of the world is just too much sometimes, at least it has been for me lately. So I had to get out.
This was Day One:
I left my hotel at 3 a.m. in the morning to arrive at my destination (Crescent Lake between Ellsworth and Oshkosh, Nebraska). Luck wasn’t on my side, as these were some of the last slivers of morning light before the sky became overtaken by dark rain clouds.
Regardless, there’s a kind of peace to be found in the gloom.
And if I came for silence, there was definitely that.
Soon the sky broke and quickly revealed some rural treasure.

I photographed a few popular Nebraska scenes as well.
Before long, though, the light was covered by more dark clouds.
… but I couldn’t sleep. So I roamed.
What about you? Where do you find peace?
Thanks for being here! More to come from this trip.

There aren’t many places this near me. I live in a town with 1,800 people, which I usually think of as remote. But a place with 64 people…. Those wide open spaces add to it. Here, we have the forest. That is what gets me away and lets me find some quit.
Oh, Jerred ... I SO envy you, brother. Where you went is EXACTLY where I long to be right now. (oh! and Gordon has a THEATER now??!? AWESOME!!!). Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us!!!
